Gov. Wike’s posters adorn London buses as he kick-starts campaign in UK

As a prelude to the 2019 general elections, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has kick-started his campaign in London as his posters dot; and are splashed across several London buses which criss-cross the capital.

The media for the advertising campaign are the iconic red London Buses on London roads which are targeted at urban audiences on the move across the city.

The campaign is ostensibly being sponsored under the aegis of “Rivers-Ijaw People support Gov. Wike for Rivers state governor 2019”-an organisation of the Ijaws led by Hon. Tonye S. Adoki.

The poster has a picture of Tonye Adoki and three others while at the opposite end is a prominent picture of a smiling Wike.

Eyebrows have however been raised as to the propriety of Wike’s campaign in London given that the London audience would hardly participate in the local election in which he is one of the candidates.

Another issue that has seen tongues wagging here is the cost of the campaign to the tax payers and people of Rivers state.

Investigations by The Tablet reveal that it costs between £60,000 and £65,000 (N29.2m -£31.6m) to advertise on the buses for 2 weeks. Thus depending on how long the campaign runs, the total amount would be high indeed.

Bus advertising in UK for the London Buses is carried out by Exterion media Limited.

As at the time of filing this report there has been no response from the company to confirm the cost of the advertising campaign. The company has not responded to our email inquiries in this regard.
